What Was It All for For: Vets Have Finally Turned on America’s Endless Wars

It is undoubtedly my favorite part of every wedding. That awkward, but strangely forthright moment when the preacher asks the crowd for any objections to the couple’s marriage. No one ever objects, of course, but it’s still a raw, if tense, moment. I just love it.

I suppose we had that ubiquitous ritual in mind back in 2007 when Keith – a close buddy and fellow officer – and I crafted our own plan of objection. The setting was Baghdad, Iraq, at the start of the "surge" and the climax of the bloody civil war the U.S. invasion had unleashed. Just twenty three years old and only eighteen months out of the academy, my clique of officers had already decided the war was a mess, shouldn’t have been fought, and couldn’t be won.

Rep. McCaul Slams House NDAA, Claims It Would ‘Illegalize’ Terror War

The ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) spent Sunday condemning the $733 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed last week as “dangerous” and “reckless.”

McCaul’s dissatisfaction with amendments that limit overseas warfare was apparent during debate on the NDAA, and on Sunday his particular focus was on two amendments that would sunset the 2001 and 2002 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMF).

The 2002 AUMF covered the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the removal of Saddam Hussein from power. Proponents of eliminating this provision note that Saddam is long dead, and Iraq is an ally, which means it is obsolete.

The 2001 AUMF was a bigger issue, as the argument for sun-setting it is that the language has been stretched to cover almost any war. The debate on the amendment made clear this was intended to be replaced by Congress before it expires outright.

Strait of Hormuz: The Most Dangerous Place on Earth

For the next 60 days, the 90-mile length of waterway known as the Strait of Hormuz will be the most dangerous place on Earth, with the prospects for an incident occurring which will trigger a regional conflict possessing global ramifications high. Following this 60-day period, the risks will only grow higher.

On July 1, Iran announced that it was exceeding some of the uranium enrichment restrictions put in place by the Joint Comprehensive Program of Action, or JCPOA (better known as the Iran nuclear agreement), which the U.S. withdrew from a year ago.

The decision to blow through the restriction were a response to Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign to to negotiate a new deal. This campaign has included the resumption of crippling economic sanctions, including the implementation of so-called “secondary sanctions” which target nations and companies that do business with Iran in violation of the embargoes.

'We Go Back 800 Years': Palestinian Fights Settler NGO's Takeover of Jerusalem Hotel

Abu-Walid Dajani, 75, is embarking on what he calls the battle of his life: To prevent the Imperial Hotel from being closed down and taken over by the Ateret Cohanim organization that runs a yeshiva and settles Jews in the Old City and East Jerusalem.

The walls of the Old City of Jerusalem can be seen through the window of Dajani’s office in the Imperial, they seem almost close enough to touch. The office walls bear pictures of former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and a young Jordanian King Hussein, together with family pictures going back a century. The hotel is located in a vast, grand building on Omar Ibn al-Khattab Square, by the Old City’s Jaffa Gate.

Top Assange Defense Account Deleted By Twitter

One of the biggest Twitter accounts dedicated to circulating information and advocacy for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, @Unity4J, has been completely removed from the site. The operators of the account report that they have been given no reason for its removal by Twitter staff, and have received no response to their appeals.

Any Assange supporter active on Twitter will be familiar with the Unity4J account, which originated to help boost the wildly successful Unity4J online vigils in which well-known Assange defenders would appear to speak out against his persecution. As of this writing, the account has been gone for a day and a half.

Glenn Greenwald has faced pushback for his reporting before. But not like this.

Glenn Greenwald was jittery. He had another big story in the works, and the atmosphere around his home office was frenetic: Dogs barking, 27 security cameras filming, big men with guns standing guard.

For weeks, from a house transformed into a bunker, Greenwald had published allegations casting doubt on the impartiality of the corruption investigation that led to the imprisonment of former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and contributed to the rise of President Jair Bolsonaro.

In two days, he would publish another story alleging that the judge who’d overseen Lula’s case, Sérgio Moro, a national hero in Brazil for his role taking on corruption, had colluded with prosecutors to convict him.

“This material is going to come out,” he said. “Even if they put me in prison.”

Yes, a nuclear freeze is the logical next step with North Korea

Much discussion has occurred about a possible freeze of North Korea’s strategic weapons programs. Is it part of the Trump administration’s strategy in the hopefully soon-to-be-resumed talks with Pyongyang, or not? Is there a debate about it within the administration, or not? Is it a good idea, or not? Unnamed sources in the administration say “yes” to some or all of these questions; national security adviser John Bolton emphatically says “no” to all of them.

But, as it turns out, a freeze of North Korea’s nuclear and long-range missile programs could be a good thing — for two reasons. First, it would build trust that could lead to subsequent deals resulting in cuts and permanent limits to North Korea’s weapons programs. It is difficult to overstate the trust gap that currently exists between the two countries, making a single, one-step agreement that resolves the nuclear issue an impossibility.

‘We don’t know how well antidepressants work’: Danish study blows lid off flawed medical research

Researchers from the Nordic Cochrane Centre have expressed alarm at research into the effectiveness of antidepressant medication, citing such degrees of widespread bias and systematic distortion that we can't be certain they work.

“We are not saying (anti-depression medication) doesn’t work. But the studies that have been done are often of poor quality and it’s therefore difficult to say anything about the effect of antidepressants,” said Asger Sand Paludan-Müller, a PhD student and one of the co-authors of the analysis, as cited by Videnskab.

Did Trump just toss House Dems a lifeline?

One of the most important rules in partisan politics is this: when your opponents are fighting amongst themselves, stay out of it. House Democrats spent the last few days in a civil war over whether Nancy Pelosi and the Congressional Black Caucus are racists or whether the “Freshman Squad” are idiots.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime apotheosis of that axiom, a singular and historic opportunity to let the party of identity politics shred itself to pieces over it.

That is, unless a Republican interrupted it and gives both sides a new target. Enter Donald Trump:

Bill and Hillary Clinton Booed at Billy Joel Concert

When Bill and Hillary Clinton attended a Billy Joel concert Thursday night, they got a different reception than they might have expected from the New York City crowd.

After singer Billy Joel dedicated a song to the former president and first lady at Madison Square Garden, an image of the couple appeared on the large screen. At first there were cheers from the audience, but they quickly turned to audible boos. The cheers and boos competed but both could be heard clearly.

Federal Debt Ceiling Reached asFederal Spending Rages

The federal government will soon run up against its self-imposed borrowing cap once again.

Current estimates are for the government to max out its credit limit at a little over $22 trillion in early September. Congress goes on recess in August, so there is some pressure to address the cap right now.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And the politicians will pose and posture and act like they are concerned .... then raise the cap again.

The Number Of Global Earthquakes Is 3 Times Above Normal – 6.1, 6.6, 7.3 + Dozens More Hit The Ring Of Fire Over The Last 48 Hours

By Michael Snyder

Within the last 48 hours we have seen large earthquakes going off like firecrackers all along the Ring of Fire. As you will see, a magnitude 6.1 quake just hit Japan, a magnitude 6.6 quake just hit Australia and a magnitude 7.3 earthquake just hit Indonesia. And of course all of this comes just about a week after southern California was hit by the two largest earthquakes that it has experienced in more than two decades. So is all of this shaking unusual?

Just a few moments ago, I pulled up the most recent data from Earthquake Track, and what I discovered is more than just a little bit alarming...

The Corrupt System Will Never Police Itself

We can no longer deceive ourselves with notions of absorbing Washington D.C. or Wall Street and making them work for us. The hope that this is possible is poison, and the elites use that poison to weaken public resolve. While we sit around waiting for the system to police itself the Earth turns and they become more powerful. Without a dramatic change in our own strategy, without direct action on our part instead of action through political middlemen, I predict our situation will only become worse.

Why the upcoming economic crisis maybe worse than the 08

1) Yield curve inversion has lasted more than 3 months. A downturn is evident. We only have only about two years (max and i think that is generous) from the start of the point of inversion.
2) Right now the market is addicted to cheap money, like an addict would be to heroin. This has been going on for a decade. Business are over-levered and borrowed and they are addicted to those low interests rates.
3) Many Americans are in their eyeballs in debt

Were the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki a War Crime and a Crime Against Humanity?

Was President Harry Truman “a murderer,” as the renowned British analytic philosopher Gertrude Elizabeth Anscombe once charged? Were the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki indeed a war crime and a crime against humanity, as she and other academic luminaries have publicly claimed? A Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at Oxford and Cambridge, who was one of the 20th century’s most gifted philosophers and recognizably the greatest woman philosopher in history, Dr. Anscombe openly called President Truman a “war criminal” for his decision to have the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki leveled by atomic bombs in August 1945 (Rachels & Rachels 127). According to another academic critic, the late American historian Howard Zinn, at least 140,000 Japanese civilians were “turned into powder and ash” in Hiroshima.

US Naval Coalition In Gulf – A Provocation Too Far

The move is but the latest in a series of efforts by the Trump administration to mobilize Arab allies into a more aggressive military stance towards Iran. It follows recent visits to the region by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton, both of whom have been urging a more organized military front led by the US to confront Iran.

The latest naval coalition proposed by General Dunford will be charged with escorting oil tankers as they pass through the Strait of Hormuz exiting the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean, and also through the Bab al Mandab entrance to the Red Sea on the Western side of the Arabian Peninsula. The former conduit serves oil supply to Asia, while the latter position between Yemen and Eritrea leads shipping to the Suez Canal on the way to the Mediterranean and Europe.

Both narrow sea passages are strategic chokepoints in global oil trade, with some 20-30 per cent of all daily shipped crude passing through them.
